Press release: ‘Stop the Rot’: SAVE calls for urgent action to revive and regenerate historic buildings at Grimsby docks and steps back from legal challenge

Press release: ‘Stop the Rot’: SAVE calls for urgent action to revive and regenerate historic buildings at Grimsby docks and steps back from legal challenge

"Marcus Binney, President of SAVE Britain’s Heritage says, “Visiting the docks last week we were astonished to find large gaping holes in the roof of the Ice Factory.  Associated British Ports claim they take their architectural heritage seriously, yet nothing appears to have been done to stop rain pouring in through the roof.  This constitutes the most callous neglect of an outstanding listed building we have seen in years”."

I wondered what this brick building was used for when I saw that it was to be demolished.

Lidl have obtained planning permission to demolish a supermarket built in 2005, and to replace it with a new supermarket.

One of the councillors said:  ""My heart goes out to the residents of this area. They get more construction on a site that has already had construction," he said.

"Lidl should have got it right the first time.""

"the North Lincolnshire Central Library has reportedly expressed an interest in keeping the object."

It's a pity there is nowhere in Grimsby to display the brooch!

Grimsby was once the largest fishing port in the world. Associated British Ports (ABP) is demolishing the 19th century buildings at the heart of the historic port of Grimsby. ABP have permitted development rights - no planning application is needed.

ABP was formerly the British Transport Docks Board. Other industries formerly in the public sector have legal duties to consider historic buildings (e.g. in Water Industry Act 1991, section 3 and Electricity Act 1989, Schedule 9). The law should be changed so that ABP (and other bodies formerly in the public sector) are subject to similar duties.
