BBC News - Road and rail overhaul vital to north of England - Clegg

BBC News - Road and rail overhaul vital to north of England - Clegg

Looking at the implications for Cleethorpes:

-an electrified line from Sheffield to Manchester  - will the line from Sheffield to Cleethorpes be electrified?

- A more coherent tourism strategy, backed by £10m in possible funding - is this a travel, or general, strategy?  Seaside resorts are often at the end of railway lines.  The line from Grimsby to Cleethorpes has already been downgraded to single track.  Is the next step the closure of the line from Cleethorpes to Grimsby?

Specifically, he will call for:

  • A fully upgraded and electrified network between Manchester, Leeds and
    Sheffield by 2025
         ......................

  • A more coherent tourism strategy, backed by £10m in possible funding

What we need in Lincolnshire is to retain the existing service from Cleethorpes to Sheffield and Manchester Airport.  There was a consultation about closing this direct service earlier this year - the outcome has not yet been announced.  Some joined up policy on transport policy is needed!

"The announcement is a long way shy of any solid commitment to speed up trains
across the Pennines................

If you've ever caught a train between, say, Hull and Liverpool, you'll know how
frustratingly slow and often overcrowded it can be. It doesn't exactly oil the
wheels of industry being stuck on an overcrowded old chug-chug for hours on end."

Mr Mitchell said that was a “crazy” plan.

He added: “I have never anything more stupid in all my life. You can’t take all you customers away and hope to prosper.”

He urged resident to “fight together.”"

The present train service between Cleethorpes and Manchester Airport is (except when the staff are on strike or the line is affected by a landslip!) excellent.  There is an hourly service on a comfortable and fast train from Cleethorpes to Doncaster, and regular connections to London.  But if the service was replaced by a stopping service from Cleethorpes to Doncaster or Sheffield (perhaps single carriage like the train from Grimsby to Lincoln) - many people would be put off coming here.

Save the train service to Cleethorpes!

'Embarrassing' Lincoln landmark The Lawn to go back on sale | Lincolnshire Echo

"

At a county council meeting on February 21, Councillor Lewis Strange asked: "With the opening of the Sir Joseph Banks exhibition at The Collection, is it time for the Sir Joseph Banks Conservatory at The Lawn to be renovated?

"Surely, this would then be a fitting memorial to one of the county's most famous botanist and one of Lincolnshire's most famous sons.""

Design for new Great Coates war memorial is unveiled | Grimsby Telegraph

"As reported, the village war memorial was removed from its previous position on the side of the former Reading Room in Station Road last year, much to the dismay of residents.

The circumstances of its removal remain shrouded in mystery, with the village council confirming only that the monument is in the possession of the stonemason."

Why was the original war memorial removed?  The costs of replacing the war memorial should be paid by the culprit(s) who removed it.

BBC News - Call for £200m Humber estuary flood scheme

"In order to try to safeguard properties the scheme would see the banks of the
estuary raised to protect communities."

Of course we don't want to see properties flooded.  But how would these flood defences affect the viability of seaside resorts along the Humber estuary?
