Lincolnshire's other Poet Laureate - Laurence Eusden (1688-1730)

Laurence Eusden was born in Yorkshire in 1688.  He became Poet Laureate in 1718.  Laurence Eusden was ordained as deacon in 1724, and as priest in 1729 and became rector of Coningsby, Lincolnshire,  where he died on 27 September 1730.

An extract from "The Origins of the Knights of the Bath":

Hail glorious Off-spring of a glorious Race!
Britannia's other Hope, and blooming Grace!
Thou smil'st already on the burnish'd Shield,
And thy weak Hand the little Sword can wield:
Already, clad in Arms, Thou mov'st along,
The Love, and Wonder of each ravish'd Throng!
A-while vouchsafe, young Hero, to retire
'Mid Streams, and Grottos, and th'Aonian Choir:
Apollo, God of Fore-sight, who with Ease
Thy distant, ripen'd Years, as present, sees,
Bids all the Muses Thee receive with Pride,
To all the Muses by all Arts ally'd.

Newmarket sausages win EU award

Newmarket sausages win EU award | Travel | The Guardian

So the Newmarket sausage (which I for one had never heard of before) now has protected geographical indication (PGI) status.  And the Lincolnshire sausage doesn't.

"But not all British bangers have enjoyed such success. An application to give the Lincolnshire sausage special protection was turned down by the government earlier this year because there were already "too many variations" across the UK.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs found there was no enduring link between the product and the county, stating that they had been made elsewhere for more than 20 years. An appeal failed last month."

Lincolnshire Day - October 1

Today (October 1st) is Lincolnshire Day. Lincolnshire Day marks the anniversary of the Lincolnshire Rising of 1536, which began after evensong in St James' Church Louth, a Catholic revolt against the establishment of the Church of England by Henry VIII.

Boris Johnson
"who will read out the ode at Monday's opening gala for the International Olympic Committee, said he was looking forward to demonstrating his command of ancient Greek before IOC and delivering a second reading in English.
"I shall try to resist the temptation to regale the attendees a further time in Latin, though I cannot make any promises," he said.

Magic of the morris men

Magic of the morris men

I must try and catch up with some of this next year.  I last saw Morris Men in Cleethorpes outside the lakeside Station of the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway.

And the only time I've been to the Beacon Hill allotments was to an open day at the Observatory.

Currys started in the Louth in 1904 as a cycle shop called Louth Cycle Company.  The original shop was at 106 Eastgate, Louth.  There is a plaque in the wall outside the shop that shows the address as 102 1/2 Eastgate.
